(Is LJ back up? Yes!)

Yesterday, I received a lovely Valentine exchange from Melissa in Vancouver. She sent me a beautifully made pinkeep and generously included a LHN chart along with the floss! (Funny enough, that was actually one I was thinking of getting. Yay, more stash!)

She made a personalized pinkeep for me, stitching two of my favorite motifs, a bunny and a peacock. I love it! I think it is so pretty!

And here is the back...
Valentine exchange

Melissa, thank you so much for a wonderful exchange! Receiving it has really brightened my week.

In other news, I had a nice time having lunch with [livejournal.com profile] brennye at Cafe Bella this afternoon and then just hanging around. As often happens, we ended up at the bookstore. Neither of us ended up buying anything, but spending time in bookstores generally trumps other activities. It was nice to hang out with Brenn again; we must do it more often :)

Also, I am trying to make more of an effort to keep track of my reading material this year. So far for January, I've read:
The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery - one of my favorites

Julie and Julia by Julie Powell - I was not too impressed with this one, although I liked the concept, which was originally an internet blog about cooking all the recipes in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The writing style just sounded too smug and rather self-absorbed to me.

Then I reread The Silver Metal Lover by Tanith Lee and finished up the month by reading the last of Libby Bray's Gemma Doyle books, The Sweet Far Thing. I am kind of irritated with myself now for having spent all that time reading the series. It was so long and the last two books were really repetitive. Gemma and friends go to a magical realm. Frolicking. People/creatures want Gemma's magic. Gemma makes terrible or stupid mistake. Gemma worries about never doing magic or going to magical realm again. But she does! More frolicking! But now someone else wants Gemma's magic, etc. This, on an endless loop. My new resolution is no more YA fantasy that is thousands of pages of nothing going on.

Now I am in the middle of reading The Lady Elizabeth by historian Alison Weir and am enjoying it so far. Every now and then there will be a clunky sentence, but that's a small quibble. The story's really good and I like reading about a younger Elizabeth than we normally see in historical fiction.

oooh.. pretties! and you didn't tell me a thing about them!

And here I was thinking it was odd that we bought nothing at the bookstore. heh. Was awesome getting to see you again. We should have like a monthly date or something.. "Oh I can't, this is Jennifer's Tuesday this week, sorry!" ;)

I remember at one point I was about to tell you that I was going to do an update that night...and then something shiny distracted me and I completely forgot! It must have been in the bookstore.

And yes, we should definitely hang out more often. I let too much time get away the past couple months and that wasn't cool.

I'm glad you enjoy them! Fortunately, pretty much all of my exchanges have been wonderful experiences, but I heard recently that someone had left bitchy, anonymous comments about other peoples' handiwork. I guess no corner of the internets is wanker free :P

Oh, and a pinkeep is basically a flat pincushion. It's really easy to make (http://tts-tutorials.blogspot.com/2007/10/vonnas-pinkeep.html).
