. . .and good riddance to the old.

I haven't posted movies in awhile, so i'm just going to make a short list since I otherwise can't be arsed.

October
Dracula 2000 -shuttup!
Happy Together - pretty, gay. Does Wong Kar-Wai ever have a plot? Love Tony Leung.
November
Stay
The Notebook
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Murder by Numbers
Pride and Prejudice - not as good as the BBC miniseries, but still very pretty
December
Infernal Affairs - Awesome. Still love Tony Leung. Need the dvd.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Jadis kicks serious ass. Love.
Serenity - Damn you, Joss Whedon, damn you to hell.
cut for spoilers )
Anyway, to continue...
Memoirs of a Geisha - Still managed to be pretty romantic even if the characters are, as my sister put it, "basically high priced ho's." And yes, I know that geisha are artists, not prostitutes and if you read any research about geisha culture, it'll say the same thing, but in the movie? Yeah. Ho's.
Skeleton Key -passably creepy.

That'll probably be it for this year, since I don't have time to watch any movies for the next day or so. I'm still trying to finish reading Oliver Twist so I'll have one last book for this year.

BPAL o'the Day: Gingerbread Poppet (courtesy of a swap with [livejournal.com profile] angel_sixgun ^_^)
"Warm, cozy gingerbread spiced with nutmeg, clove and cinnamon."
Damn, this smells good. I'm gonna put it on tonight when I go to sleep and dream of rich, buttery gingerbread cake.

That's all for tonight.

the Marie Antoinette trailer

Hmm. A gorgeously shot period film set to 80's Brit pop.

*mulls it over some more*

Yes, I definitely need to see this. I hope the movie itself has the same type of soundtrack, actually. It's definitely kind of jarring, but works in a weird way. I like it. I read somewhere that this movie is based on the Antonia Fraser biography, so it should be quite sympathetic. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's coming out for ages o.0

Top 10 guy-on-guy onscreen kisses

I'm just posting this link so I can have a subject line that totally grabs your attention. I've seen about half the films on that list and they are pretty hot. I think I need to get Wilde on dvd; I've never been able to see Jude Law as anyone besides a really bratty gay boyfriend, nanny or not.

Anyway, this link reminds me of a story that Sarah's mom Jeanne told me once. A few years back, Jeanne was in town and I went over to say hi. After chatting for awhile, Jeanne said, "You know, a few weeks ago, I went to the video store and asked if they could recommend any Ewan McGregor movies." Jeanne was getting the movie for her other daughter Charlotte, who was 13 at the time and had liked Ewan McGregor ever since seeing Moulin Rouge. The clerk recommended Velvet Goldmine and for some reason or another, Jeanne decided to preview the movie before giving it to Charlotte. Needless to say, Jeanne decided that Charlotte was too young for a movie about glam rock and gay sex.

At this point, I have kind of a bad feeling about where this is going and Sarah and I exchange a look.

The next day, both Jeanne and Charlotte go back to the video store and while Charlotte's checking out the other movies, the clerk asks Jeanne how she liked the movie.

"I really didn't think that's an appropriate movie for a 13 year old," Jeanne told her.

"Oh no!" the clerk said. "I thought it was for you! I would never have recommended it for Charlotte. Of course, she's too young for a movie like that."

At this point, Charlotte walked up and asked, "What's wrong with it? It can't be as bad as Velvet Goldmine."

Both Jeanne and the clerk were shocked. "You've seen this?" Jeanne asked.

"Oh yeah," Charlotte said. "Sarah and Jennifer let me watch it. We didn't watch all of it. Just the parts where Ewan was naked and we fast forwarded through the rest."

I really wanted to hide under my chair at that point. Sarah and I both had that "we so fucked this up" look on our faces. It had never occured to either of us to tell Charlotte not to tell her mom about it in much the same way it hadn't occured to us that you can be a fan of Ewan McGregor and not, at some point, see his dick in a movie. That's quite a few movies you'd be missing out on.

Luckily, Jeanne didn't seem as upset as much as she just really wanted to see us squirm. And we didn't let her down on that, I think. Since then, I've heard that Charlotte has gotten to see Velvet Goldmine in its entirety and now has her own copy. See, corrupting innocent teens all works out in the end.

Okay, made the baked rice pudding. Uh, not sure that came out right. The recipe didn't specify cooked or uncooked rice, so I made a guess and used cooked rice. And it took near 3 hours to cook and still didn't really have a pudding-like consistancy. On the plus side, I added vanilla and cinnamon to the recipe and the flavor part tasted fine; it's just the consistancy didn't seem right. Maybe I'll try it again with uncooked rice.

I've just noticed I haven't posted movies for either August or September. D'oh.

Today I went to visit Sarah and Charlotte (who is in town from Arkansas.) Charlotte had bought a package of Brie and between the two of us, we managed to eat the entire wheel of cheese (with crackers) in one sitting. It was awesome.

Some of the comments:
"No wonder people name their kids after this." - Charlotte
"This is so good, it is like a cheese-gasm!" -me
"Are you two drunk on cheese?" - Sarah

Something that freaks me out (besides the power of cheese), is that occasionally you can find really artsy, foreign movies at Walmart, of all places. Once, I found a Werner Herzog movie there. I stopped there tonight and found a copy of A Tale of Two Sisters. A Gothic Korean horror movie that didn't play within probably a hundred miles of here when it first came out and today, it was on the rack above some Hillary Duff dvd. It was only $9 so I went ahead and bought it (the Korean movie, not the Duff flick.) Here's hoping it's in the original language and not badly dubbed crap, or I'm selling it used on Amazon.

if you haven't seen this already. I saw a trailer for it last week. This looks unbearably cute. I think it could even be referred to as explodably cute, because a)it is so cute, one could actually pop and b)they are probably planning on blowing up Gotham.

. . .because once night falls, huge swarms of bugs come out. It's been like a plague lately. Driving at night, there was this constant pinging noise of tiny insect bodies hitting the car windshield. Also, you can't walk outside without having to avoid the hundreds of june bugs reeling around the pavement like little, tiny insect drunks. [Napoleon Dynamite voice]Gross![/ND]

Anyway, I finally found my little notebook, so here are the movies I've recently seen. I've been rather slack in keeping up with them.
Movies for April and May )
That's it! Books next time.

Completely random message I heard while on hold yesterday:
"Beware of drug dealers who prey on insecure and lonely sailors."

My customer must have been calling from a Navy office, but that is so much cooler than listening to Bryan Adams hold music. Poor lonely sailors!

I saw Revenge of the Sith Friday. It was okay. It didn't completely renew my love for the series, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it as much as one possibly can when one wants to travel back in time with a red marker and edit the hell out of all three scripts.

In retrospect, I like how Samuel L. Jackson looked like he really wanted to go into shouting mode, but somehow restrained himself. Must! Keep! Jedi! Calm!

I also really want to get the box of Cheese-Its where Darth Vader is levitating a handful of crackers. That cracks me up. I keep hearing James Earl Jones saying, "Behold the power of cheese." I should buy it and sell it on Ebay in 20 years. OMFG, I should scan it and make a LJ icon out of it.

From now on, whenever I'm feeling depressed (Life! Don't talk to me about life!), I'm going to watch this video and feel all is right with universe. As much as it's possible for it to be.

Woo! Tomorrow Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy opens in theaters. I will be catching a late show after I get off accursed work. I'm very excited. Hitchhiker's is one of my favorite books ever. I really hope they don't screw it up too much. But it has dancing Sam Rockwell and Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin the Paranoid Android <3<3<3, so that's good.

The other interesting part about tomorrow will be to see if Sarah freaks out over the adaption if it goes badly. Fortunately, there's quite a few of us going, so if the movie version does turn out to be a letdown, there should be enough of us there to talk her down from going to Orlando and sniping a Disney executive.

Books read in February

The Hostile Hospital - Lemony Snicket
Madame Serpent - Jean Plaidy
The first in a trilogy about Catherine de Medici. Kinda sympathetic, kinda creepy at this point.
The Stupidest Angel - Christopher Moore
Christmas zombies, very funny. May need to find more of his books.
A Very Long Engagement - Sebastian Japrisot
Very good, but I think the movie did a better job of plotting.
The Probable Future - Alice Hoffman
Should have been called "The Predictable Future". I used to really enjoy Hoffman's style of magical realism, but her lastest couple of books have just bored. It wasn't bad, but in the end left me rather cold. It's pretty much a chicklit with a twist of magical realism
The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists - Gideon Defoe
Laughed out loud. I hope they make a movie of this so it can piss off Creationists and also so they can cast Eddie Izzard as the Pirate Captain.
The Italian Woman - Jean Plaidy
The 2nd Catherine de Medici book. Definitely more evil.

Okay, Movies for February

Quills - Very good, especially for a movie that has a graphic scene involving poop.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - Iron Giant attacks. I enjoyed the part where Jude Law punched out Gwyneth Paltrow's annoying character. I would have punched her out earlier personally.
Before Sunset - Loved the ending. Thought it did a good job revisiting the characters. Prolly better than the first one.
Dangerous Liasons - John Malkovich is kinda sexy in this. Shit, did I say that out loud?
Much Ado About Nothing - I really like Beatrice and Benedick, but cannot understand why Hero doesn't beat the crap out of Robert Sean Leonard.
The Cat Returns - Cute, but not as good as Whisper of the Heart, which I adored. Also, why does the animation quality not look as good as other Studio Ghibli films? It doesn't have the same distinct style and looks more like an average anime.
P.S. - There's really no way of saying, "I think you're my dead, reincarnated boyfriend" without sounding like a total idiot, is there?

Man, it's been really boring lately. Here's some random updates.

It's sleeting and nasty outside. And my sadly inadequate accounting skills have led to my being really broke this week. Both situations have caused me to stay inside and try not to spend any more money than I ought to. I used this spare time to put up some Ebay auctions of my perfume stash.

Since I'm not entirely a good girl, I went to Best Buy today and bought Wonderfalls on dvd. I also bought Quills, which I haven't seen before, but it was in the bargain bin.

Work continues to be annoying. They added a new program for people to redeem points for hotel rooms; it doesn't work very well, of course. It also takes so long to deal with, that it slows everyone down and causes huge queues. Bugger.

The listmaking continues, some stats for January

What I heard today. . .
"Dang, girl, how many arts and crafts projects do you need?" from Mickie. I had three cross stitch projects on my desk and was working on knitting a scarf at the time. A lot, apparently. Short attention span and all.

"Did you know that if you press Alt and Tab, you can toggle between windows?" during a training class at work. This got the trainer a lot of dirty looks.

Also, Sarah told me that when she went to the liquor store today, some customer wanted to know if she could use her gun permit as her photo id :o

What I read today. . .
I'm currently reading The Picture of Dorian Gray. It is so witty, I recognize something on nearly every page; it's like reading a Random Quote Generator. The notes in the Penguin edition are also, if inadvertantly, amusing.

"Achilles statue: This twenty-foot-high bronze statue, which stands in Park Lane, was cast from French guns in 1822 in honour of the victorious Duke of Wellington. Erected by the 'women of England', it was the first public nude statue displayed in England."

What I ate today. . .
I went to a Japanese hibachi restuarant called Shiki with some friends. I tried the Tiger Roll, which was eel and avocado wrapped around rice and shrimp. Sooo good. Nicole's kid Brodie didn't seem to eat too much, but he had a great time watching the hibachi chef cook and set fires.

Also, Shiki had the best fried rice that I've ever mooched off of someone else's plate.

What I saw today. . .
After dinner, we rented Ju-on. When will I ever learn to stick to Studio Ghibli or samurai when it comes to Japanese movies? It was boring and worse, pointless and plotless. It was just a series of creepy deaths, ad infinitum, hopping from person to person until it felt like it was going to kill everyone in Tokyo like a paranormal virus. There are some movies that I feel more fond of (or more lenient of its faults) in retrospect, but I think this is one that grows in annoyance while remembering it.

Anyhoo . . .
Am recovering from cat allergies now, but all in all, not a bad day. Work has not improved, but I don't feel as depressed about it for the moment. Like airline fares, my mood is subject to change and most likely will.

favorite movies of last year

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - I think this might be one of my favorite movies of any year. So sweet and funny. It's just one of those movies that stays with you for a long time.
Kill Bill, vol 2 - They need to come out with the special edition set already, damn it.
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle
Spiderman 2 - Okay, I'm a geek. But you probably knew that already.
Hidalgo
Ray

And there's a ton of other movies from last year that I probably would list except that I haven't gotten around to seeing them or they haven't reached Oklahoma yet. Like A Series of Unfortunate Events, which I finally saw last week and really enjoyed. I thought the children playing the Baudelaires did a very good job of looking deadpan. This also means that I somehow managed to get through all of 2004 without seeing Jude Law in a movie until last week, and even then, only in silhouette. (Wait, I did rent Cold Mountain, which I hated. Stupid ass movie.)

Most expensive 80's music video ever made
The Phantom of the Opera

And best time at the worst movie of the year. . .
The Village
I went to see this with a bunch of friends up in Tulsa. It's horrid, just absolutely horrid. If there had been other people there and we had to sit through that dreck silently, it would have been unendurable; I would have died a little inside. Fortunately, the four of us were the only people in the theater and we got to yell and make fun of it as much as we wanted to. And there's a lot to make fun of. If you ever feel the need to refresh your snarkiness, I highly recommend this.

In other news,
I got my ACLU card in the mail today. I am now officially a pinko commie enemy of the state. Yay!
